How the BCM Story Began...

BCM began its ministry with undergraduate collegians at UAB in 1969, the same year UAB was founded. BCM has been providing ministry to medical students in Birmingham since 1959. Metro Birmingham  BCM has grown to include Birmingham Southern College and Jeff State Community College.

This legacy of ministry is rooted in Southern Baptist efforts in collegiate work that began in Texas in 1920 (first known by the name BSU). BCM soon spread to other states in the South and by 1921 a local BCM was established in Tuscaloosa at The University of Alabama in partnership with FBC Tuscaloosa.

Today, 768 college and university campuses have a BCM. Nationwide, BCM involves over 70,000 students annually. And, we still have room for you.

The Story Continues...

"Reach Every Student". This is more than a slogan that BCMs across the nation have adopted. This is our desire in Birmingham. Churches and Campus Ministries work together to see this realized in each student generation. BCM has many aspects of our ministry that are student led. But if we are to see greater numbers of students hear about and experience the love of Jesus, it will take a larger vision that includes local churches.

In 2001 BCM began to partner with individual churches to provide ministry for as many student affinity groups as possible. We actively partner with local Baptist Churches to effectively show the love of Christ to a diverse and segmented campus. Click on "Learn More" to discover more about Church Partnerships.

How the BCM Story is Supported...

Metro Birmingham BCM is supported financially through several avenues of funding:
1. Southern Baptist Churches in Alabama give through The Cooperative Program to support missions causes in our state, country, and internationally. This avenue of funding provides the salaries of campus ministers, the construction and upkeep of our student center, and provides support for student involvement in missions. Follow the embedded link for more information about The Cooperative Program.

2. Program support for the ongoing ministry of Metro Birmingham BCM is provided by churches giving to mission causes through the Birmingham Metro Baptist Association and the North Jefferson Baptist Association. This crucial avenue of funding is used for discipleship, outreach, evangelism, leadership development, and missions efforts.

3. Two churches, Dawson Memorial Baptist Church and Fullness Christian Fellowship, give direct support to Metro Birmingham BCM for program support.

4. Alumni and Friends of BCM also give direct support to our ministry. See options under the Alumni & Friends tab.
